Born

"How can a man once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother's womb and be born again, can he? John 3: 4  Have You notice the many references of birth in the Gospels this Easter:  Blood and Water, re-enter the womb, born/born again?

Birth is an important metaphor.  When we celebrate the life of a loved one we say that the deceased has been born into eternal life.  From Jesus' side came blood and water; we all can remember our broken water and the blood of the birth of our children.  And that vision of birth comes to me every time I think of the passion and death of Christ.  Letting go of his life to redeem us from our sins, his love so deep that he is willing to do his Father's will.

Our pregnancy a time when we let go of our old life to prepare for a new one, when we go through labour to bring our children into the world.  We love them without ever knowing them, we give to them all of ourselves for their lives.

Lent the pregnancy of our spiritual selves, Holy Week the labour, Easter our spiritual birth.
