I came to learn about the importance of hospitality to the people of the Middle East. At the time of Jesus it was a great honour to serve the Rabbi, it was thought to be a blessing if the Rabbi came to your home and stayed; and it was no different for those who followed Jesus. Peter's mother-in-law serves Jesus, which is interesting because it would have been the duty of the daughter to do the serving. Mom must have told her daughter that she felt called to service not out of duty but out of gratitude.
Think about all the times it is mentioned that someone is serving Jesus, who is it? It is the angels or women, so women were being held on an equal par to the angels.
